Artists need creative space in more ways than one.

This discussion came up when Catherine Coulter Lloyd was in Greenville a couple of weeks ago and we had lunch at Dale’s Indian Cusine on Evans Street.   Catherine (Cat) and I are old friends who met in art school and instantly created a bond over our mutual love of ceramics and craft- or basically anything handmade.  We are also both mountain girls with deep Appalachian roots, and we have spent much time bemoaning the swampy, flat and humid eastern North Carolina farmland and lamenting about our mutual homesickness for the hills.

Like many women who get together, a lunch date is an opportunity to have a “hen party”, venting and chatting about the ebb and flow of our lives.  What husbands are doing, our careers, books we have read, her two cats, my arsenal of animals, step children, nephews and the health of our parents.  One topic that almost always creeps up in our conversations is our need to create and the frustration of not having enough time in the day.     Catherine calls it her dichotomy, the way she has to split herself in two, which she literally did with the February opening of her exhibition of new ceramic work entitled, Entwined.

Clay seems to be the glue that binds Cat’s many worlds together.  She has told me on more than one occasion that working in clay connects her with a long and broad family chronicle that includes generations of gardeners, cultivators, landscape architects and creative workers.   The eloquent shapes and pathways of the flowers and leaves embedded onto Cat’s clay boxes and carved on tile murals are images that materialized from her love of nature and her experience of being raised among gardens, rivers and mountains.   It is through these images she is creating an ancestral and family narrative.

Cat’s day job is as the Visual Art Specialist at the Maria V. Howard Art Center in Rocky Mount, NC and like most art administrators, her work schedule is demanding and erratic which leaves little room for down time, so working after hours in her studio can go as late as 2:00 am.  Most of us who are driven by a creative force can understand the dichotomy of balancing art, work and family.  There is a determination to have something to say no matter how minuet or profound it may be, but finding a way to quiet our minds in a world that is loud and chaotic is not an easy chore and inspiration does not come spontaneously.

I recently read an essay by Silas House entitled The Art of Being Still.  In this essay he writes about what this is like for writers and their process of writing:  “We writers must become multitaskers who can be still in our heads while also driving safely to work, while waiting to be called “next” at the D.M.V., while riding the subway or doing the grocery shopping or walking the dogs or cooking supper or mowing our lawns.”

The same is true for visual artists.  We must carve out creative time the best way we can. We imagine and design in our heads- even while dropping our kids off at school or changing out the the laundry.  In addition, visual artists also have the challenge of designing a working space that fits their artistic medium.  My clay studio is in my garage.  It is not exactly fancy and I do have to maneuver around the shop vac, air compressor and some gardening tools to work, but this is my place to create.  I guess you could call my garage studio the artistic version of the “Man Cave” except no ESPN.

Cat and I have talked about where this struggle and accomplishment of our creative work is really going to eventually lead us.  I can see good things for Cat down the road as she continues to create these poignant works of art.   We become who we are, as my mother says, through a series of the choices we make throughout our lives.

The world would be better if we taught our children those types of things. Not how to wipe your mouth with a napkin so much as how to become someone worthwhile.

Lucky Rabbit Girl

I bought four tomato plants in June, and they are now full of tomatoes.   Still green and firm but starting to display a hint of red yellow skin that teases me with the promise there will soon be a meaty red Better Boy on my dinner plate.

Neither Chris nor I have been very successful at growing tomatoes in our back yard.  Our neighborhood was once a tobacco field and the soil has been exhausted by years of farming and not very hospitable to tomatoes.

Last spring we decided to place tiny tomato plants in containers filled with rich velvety soil, a good choice we both agreed.  These tomatoes, along with our blueberry bushes, are the occasional victims of blackbirds that eat the berries and peck into the flesh of the tomatoes.

To “protect” my fledgling garden, I placed a large ceramic white rabbit I made a few years ago right in the middle of the garden. She is my talisman, but she is also my wounded girl.    When I was moving out of my old house, part of the rabbit girl’s ear broke off.  I stumbled while carrying the box that she was in, and my rabbit tumbled onto the concrete floor of my front porch.   Just a few chips off her ear.  I figured her wound was a battle scar for having survived and that she was lucky she didn’t bust more than just her ear.

Rabbits are a part stories, and when it comes to stories about rabbits, I think about Eostre, a Celtic goddess associated with the moon and with mythic narratives of death, redemption, and resurrection.  Eostre is what our culture refers to as the Easter Bunny, but to me, she embodies what it means to preserver through darkness and the struggle to come out the other end…. into the light.

Sometimes after work, when the day has cooled off, I grab a glass of wine, and I walk out on to my back deck and admire my thriving tomatoes.   I see my rabbit girl kneeling on her knees keeping watch over the garden.

She’s a good guardian.

Letters to the Dead

The Letter

“I love it because the woman looks kinda like a ghost.  You can almost see through her.” This ten-year-old girl gazed up at me with her big brown eyes when she said these words.

I am the director of an art museum in Greenville, North Carolina and my students are working on designing their own exhibition of art works from the Museum’s permanent collection. The Letter by Jodi Connelly is the piece this student chose.

The woman in the painting looks ephemeral. She is in the midst of despair.  She is surrendering to the reality of her mysterious circumstance as her body leans over a chair and her face is cradled in her arms.

I am amazed that this young student chose The Letter.  It is a small and insignificant painting in the Museum’s art collection. Far and away from better-known art works, like the large color field target painting by Kenneth Noland or Louise Nevelson’s black and brown cardboard collage.

Created by an East Carolina University art student in the mid 1990’s, this obscure artwork usually stands obediently and quietly in one of the racks of the Museum’s art storage vault.  It reminds me of a shy child waiting to be picked to play on an elementary kickball team, making as little noise as possible but hoping to be chosen for the team and ultimately recognized for her potential.

As I look at the painting, I am intrigued by the woman’s crumpled posture on the chair and I think of a friend who recently and tragically lost her father and the grief and alienation she now feels.

Many of us have been there… crying over the last letters or words our loved ones wrote before they died. If only we could write them back and they could read our letters.    I wonder what these letters would say?  What would I write to my first husband who has been gone for almost six years.  The death of the people we love is devastating and the feeling of loss lingers on throughout our lives.   It is hard not to feel a tinge of anger about their departure, and I am certainly not above holding a grudge, especially towards the dead.

Food for Thought

One weekend, while I was a college student, I went home with my friend Susan to Chapel Hill, NC.

Chapel Hill is a vibrant place and home to UNC Chapel Hill.  The town is funky and in the late 80’s it was filled with galleries and bookstores as well as a progressive music scene.

As a wide-eyed stranger, I was enamored with my surroundings as Susan drove me around in her red Honda Accord, showing me the sights that included, Weaver Street Market Food Co Op, the Ackland Art Museum, and UNC Planetarium.  We walked on the greenway, before I even knew what a greenway was.   We shopped on Franklin Street at thrift stores and funky jewelry boutiques. The people who strolled by were fashionable and offbeat.

The allure of this quant hipster town would one day call me back and I would make my home in Chapel Hill and Durham for several years.  But on this weekend, I was simply a visitor and enjoying myself as I breathed in the Tar Heel air and became acquainted with Susan’s family.

Chapel Hill is known for its amazing eclectic restaurants.  Just a few years ago, Bon Appetite Magazine named it “America’s Foodiest Small Town”.  However, long before it earned that title, on a spring day back in 1989, Susan’s dad, Paul wanted to take his daughter and me out to a fancy dinner.

One of my delights is good food.   I must have inherited my palette from my parents who love to travel and try different foods.  As a child, whenever we trekked from my hometown, to a larger city, it was a thrill to eat out.    I will never forget the first time I ate Chinese food at the Oriental Inn in Lexington, KY.    Hong Sue Shrimp. Shrimp fried in egg tempera batter with sautéed vegetables.   I didn’t think it could get any better than that.

I was looking forward and curious about where Paul was planning to take us to dinner.   Paul announced his choice: “Girls I really want this night to be special.  This is a great restaurant with unique food and I want to share it with my daughter and her friend, Charlotte. We are going to Crook’s Corner for dinner”.

I had no idea what Crook’s Corner was but it sounded great to a poor college student and an alternative to ramen noodles in a hot pot in my college dorm room.   Paul continued, “Crook’s Corner is a Chapel Hill restaurant that serves world famous southern cuisine.”

The oxymoron of “world famous and southern cuisine” dumbfounded me.   I had grown up eating the Appalachian version of southern cooking.  Soup beans, green beans and corn bread were staples on my family’s dinner table.  My grandmother was revered for her recipes. Butter and lard had been her downfall but the glory that made her cooking so delicious.    My mother did not compare to my granny as a cook, but she also held back on the fat back and introduced her family to salad.   We also had local greasy spoon restaurants in town such as the Circle T and the Chat and Chew.  But neither of these would have ever had the word “cuisine” associated to their name.  It was just food and no one certainly made a production out it.  To me, southern food was why you went out to dinner in the first place…. It was a way to escape what was familiar.

So it was on this day that something so personal to me as the food I ate growing up became a revelation.   People actually desired something I took for granted.

Over the years, I have reflected on this experience. It opened me up to something right before my eyes. Just like the people of the south, the food of the south reflects a unique blend of cultures and culinary traditions.  Native American, Spanish, French, African American and British all contributed to the development of “southern food”. Good food is a part of the art of living.  Crook’s Corner, the “temple of southern cooking” lives up to its reputation and carries on this varied southern food tradition.

Somehow along the way, southern cuisine became a popular avenue to experience southern traditions in much that same way as someone may eat Italian food to experience Italian traditions.   That seems so strange to me, because my familial culture, eastern Kentucky, is the antithesis of all of that.

It was something you held close because of your twangy accent or because of the way “outsiders” reacted to you.   I guess you could call it the “Wow Factor” of a geographic region that has always been marginalized in the media and in the mainstream.   The very thing that is considered a mockery also attracts fascination and attention.

I sometimes wonder if people don’t grasp for something that they have lost, like a cherished memory through the love of a good meal.  Tiny bits of that memory can be conjured up with the food we eat or grew up eating.   Food is a powerful avenue to our hearts.

So, in my own life, I am thankful for my older brother John.  He lives in Pawleys Island, SC and is the designated family chef.  John can make a mean pot of soup beans.  He can artfully string shucky beans together as well as make the best low country shrimp and grits I have ever tasted.  I am glad to know that my granny’s flair for cooking is still alive and well in the culinary talents of my brother.

Thank goodness for all of the grannies of the world and their unique family and communal recipes.
